Sitting Is Killing You

You may want to stand up to read this.
On average, most people sit down anywhere between 5-12 hours a day. Some of us tend to even sit on the couch more than we sleep in our own beds. YIKES! The chair is our worst enemy because the human body was simply not made to sit around all day long! Sitting too long can lead to chronic disease, reduced life expectancy, weight gain, heart disease and depression. Here's how!
When you sit down for long periods of time, your body starts shutting down at the metabolic level. Our body's circulation also slows down, burning less calories, and  making it easier for us to gain weight. Also, the enzymes responsible for breaking down fat stop working as hard, leading to heart disease. Not to mention, your body starts using less blood sugar. Sitting is so passive that you can actually burn more calories chewing a stick of gum than just simply sitting. A new study review of more than 80,000 people shows that spending too much time sitting is linked to a two-fold increase in the risk of diabetes. Scary, huh?
I get it, most of us have jobs that require us to sit at a desk for up to 6-8 hours on a daily basis so sitting can be very hard to avoid in that situation. Get creative and find a way!
Here are some ways to break that cycle of sitting too long at work:
  • Don't forget to take your breaks-outside.
  • Go grab a cup of coffee or glass of water.
  • Don't forget bathroom breaks as needed!
  • Stand up every half hour and stretch at your desk.
  • If your building as an elevator-take the stairs instead.
  • Go out for your lunch break.
  • Do squats at your desk.
  • When you make phone calls or reading emails, stand up to do so.
What are some ways that you keep active during the day?

I had the chance to review two of the many cloth diaper brands that they carry: Kawaii & Thirsties.

The Kawaii Little Green Baby Bamboo PocketCloth Diaper was one of my favorite cloth diapers to use on my son-and I have tested a LOT of different brands. The inside is completed lined with 100% organic bamboo which is like Heaven to touch. I can only imagine how he feels wearing it! The diaper features velcro which is easier and faster than snaps to get on the baby when they are wiggly. Two inserts came with the diaper and they were 100% organic bamboo as well. I admit I am quite tempted to use them as facial cloths because they are so soft!

Bamboo is an amazing fabric full of features:

  • It is an organic fabric
  • Won't irritate the skin
  • Helps baby stay cool in summer and warm in winter
  • Fabric has micro-holes that make the fabric super absorbent and breathable
  • Comfortable for baby
  • Naturally anti-bacterial
  • Doesn't hold odors

The second diaper that I had a chance to review from Thanks Mama, was the Thirsties Duo All In One Cloth Diaper. The diaper was so easy to use!!! Why? Because it is an All-In-One! Had I known about this beforehand, all of my diapers would have been AIO's. This diaper fit my son very well and was trim on him, even through his onesie. The diaper features a tunnel design that allows the attached insert to get cleaned thoroughly. Diapers like these make night time changing a breeze because you aren't searching high and low for extra inserts, etc. This diaper comes in either hook & loop closures or Snaps and as you can see, I chose snaps.

Thanksmama.com is dedicated to bringing the best cloth diapers, training pants and swim diapers on the market at the best value. They have many cloth diaper packages that have volume discounts built in, many come with complementary products and make shopping for cloth diapers in bulk easy. Cloth diapers for parents that are new to cloth are also available; they are great for trying different types and brands of cloth diapers. Thanks Mama has knowledgeable customer service that would be happy to help with any questions or concerns.

If you want to be up to date on everything cloth diapers, know about current promotions, want to read and participate in discussions about natural parenting, modern family fun and challenges, green living; not to mention participate in weekly Giveaways, Sweepstakes, Twitter Parties and Contests, follow Thanks Mama on Facebook, Twitter, Blog, Pinterest or Google +.

Overall, I was very happy with Thanks Mama. Their staff was so incredibly friendly and their free shipping was lightning fast! I also enjoyed browsing their huge inventory to suit my baby's needs.

Paleo Fudge

One huge complaint that I hear when people follow the Paleo diet is the lack of dessert options made available to them. Therefore, they tend to "cheat" or "splurge" once they get a chance. What most people do not realize is that you can absolutely substitute brown, powered, & granulated sugars with natural & raw sugars derived from honey or maple in just about any sweets recipe out there! Just as you may substitute wheat & white flours with coconut & almond flours for a Paleo friendly option.

Here is an amazing Paleo & Vegan friendly chocolate fudge recipe that I love making at Christmas time.
  • 1 1/2 cups almond butter
  • 1/2 cup cocao powder
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil, melted
  • 1/3 cup raw honey or pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  1. Place all ingredients into a food processor or blender and blend until smooth.
  2. Pour into a greased pan evenly.
  3. Freeze for 3 hours and then slice.
  4. Eat immediately or store in an air tight container and keep in the freezer.
