How to Prep Your Cloth Diapers

Today, I spent a good hour or so prepping my BumGenius 4.0s and Charlie Bananas. I am new to cloth diapering so this will be my very first time using cloth diapers! The most important thing to know is that before the initial use, you MUST prep your diapers. By prepping, I mean simply washing them. Some diapers, however, require more than one wash.

Since I am using microfiber inserts and cloth diaper covers, most companies such as BumGenius & Charlie Banana state that you only need to wash one time. The more you wash, the more absorbent the diapers become which is better for you and baby.

Here is the prepping routine for these two brands.

  • Separate pastel colors from dark colors.
  • Wash on hot water using small amount of detergent. I chose to use BumGenius' detergent brand today. I washed my covers and inserts together.
  • Rinse cycle cold.
  • Tumble dry inserts on low. I hung my diaper covers to dry outside.
And thats it! Please note, everyone has their own honor system and washing once may or may not be enough for you and your baby. If thats the case, I recommend washing or prepping up to 5 times before baby gets here. Though with these materials, once is clearly enough.

HAPPY PREPPING!
