Fit Mommy Controversies

The mommy craze that has started lately has been one crazy debate!
Since when did being fit after or during pregnancy become a crime?

Somehow, these 3 ladies below have managed to catch some flack-for simply taking carer of their bodies. I am sure you guys have heard of Caroline Eriksen, the model who posted a perfect selfie 4 days postpartum. Or Maria Kang, a mother of three boys who became a fitness model. Or even Lea-Ann Ellison, the mom who stuck with CrossFit during pregnancy.

All 3 of these ladies have had some pretty sickening comments and allegations made towards them:
*They starved themselves during pregnancy.
*Them being fit is "selfish."
*They put their baby at risk.
*The nasty list goes on..

(All 3 of these ladies gave birth to healthy on target babies, by the way.)

Is the real problem here jealousy? Is it the fact that over half of Americans are actually obese?
Is it "fat shaming" to take care of yourself and bounce back hotter than ever after having a baby?
I am sorry, but no amount of surgery is going to make you look like you never had a baby. These women did it the old fashioned way-hard work and perseverance.

When I post photos of myself lifting at the gym, I occasionally get the "be careful" comments. It chaps my ass because yes I am careful. Yes, I do know what I am doing. No, I did not just wake up and begin this routine on a whim. Most of all, why do people think that its crazy to maintain a healthy routine before and after pregnancy?

We only have our ancestors to thank for that. But now, time is changing. I am happy these women are coming out and not giving a damn. They are fit and proud and have done nothing wrong. They are not "unrealistic." Who's to say what is and what isn't?

Why not turn the focus to the REAL problem of American obesity, instead?

  1. I did a post on my blog about this too but on Caroline (http://treasuretroveofluxury.wordpress.com/2013/12/08/whats-wrong-with-being-fit/), though I follow Maria on IG. All the things you mentioned, especially the selfish comments I saw also. It's annoying that people think that you should still look like you're carrying a baby when you've already given birth to him/her! I saw a picture of a woman on IG who had her baby SEVEN months ago and still had a belly out to here and she wasn't actively exercising at all and was okay with it! And I'm not trying to judge (I know firsthand what it's like when people judge you, make fun, etc. b/c of your weight) but to point out the incredulous belief and acceptance of not getting into shape after you have a baby and that it's seen as selfish or taking away from the baby for women to exercise and be fit. Nonsense being floated around that women should "enjoying" their pregnancies AKA eat whatever you want and be lazy. Silly me, I thought it was being over morning sickness and loving the feel of the baby kick.

Anyway, I'm in the process of losing weight. You're such an inspiration b/c I'm also short (5'1") and I'm on a journey to lose weight and get fit. I've already lost 25 lbs. but that was just through clean eating and eating smaller portions. Now I've got 52 lbs that I'm actively losing through exercise and clean eating before I reach my goal weight. So far it's going great. I'm only in the 2nd week and I've a lot of momentum. I have to keep reminding myself that losing the weight isn't going to happen overnight. I'm never discouraged or anything but I think a lot of us feel we exercised one day and we should be GW in the morning LOL. But I bring myself back down to earth and remind myself I've got to put in the work. I try to do 20-30 minutes, 4-5 times a week and I'm eating healthy. I want to get in shape b/c on the 22nd I'll be turning 20. I feel very good that I'll be spending 20, 25lbs lighter but I still don't want to spend my 20's fat, unhappy with my body, and unconfident. I want to wear a bikini, which I've never done (I'm a bit conservative so it might be just in my room LOL). And heaven help me one day I want to be a mother & I want to actually be able to run after my future-possible-kids & I don't want to pass down unhealthy eating and living habits to them.

P.S. Love your blog! Congrats on your baby!! :D
